Raising Steps Uganda Brings Care, Comfort and Green Hope to Busembatia Health Centre III

On a bright morning in Busembatia, a town in Bugweri District in eastern Uganda, the corridors of Busembatia Health Centre III filled with an unusual kind of activity. Instead of only the familiar rhythm of patients waiting and nurses moving between wards, there were volunteers carrying buckets, brooms and boxes of supplies. Raising Steps Uganda had come to serve. The organisation's hospital outreach was a simple idea carried out with real heart: give patients what they need to feel dignified, make the spaces where they heal cleaner and safer, and leave something behind that will keep giving long after the visit ends. The first gift the team delivered was a stock of sanitary materials for patients. For many families in rural communities, items such as toilet papers, liquid soap and basic supplies like sugar are not guaranteed, especially when illness strikes and money is stretched thin. A woman recovering in a ward should not have to worry about whether she can manage her most basic personal needs. Health workers at a lower level facility like Busembatia Health Centre III often do the most with the least. They serve as the first point of care for surrounding villages, handling everything from maternal health to common infections. Donations of this kind ease a burden that rarely makes headlines but is felt every day at the bedside. As the volunteers moved through the wards, they spoke with patients, offered encouragement and handed over the supplies personally. For those receiving them, the gesture carried a message that went beyond the items themselves: you are seen, and you matter. The outreach was not only about giving. It was also about working. Team members rolled up their sleeves and cleaned several rooms within the health centre, sweeping floors, wiping surfaces and clearing away the grime that builds up in busy public facilities. Cleanliness in a hospital is never cosmetic. It is a frontline defence against the spread of infection, and in a setting where resources are limited, a clean room can be the difference between recovery and complication. The volunteers worked alongside hospital staff, and the shared effort quickly turned into something warmer than a service project. There was laughter, teamwork and a sense of community as room after room was made fresh. Before wrapping up, the team turned their attention outdoors. Around the compound of the health centre, they planted trees, an investment in tomorrow that will quietly pay dividends for years. Trees offer shade for patients and relatives who wait outside for treatment, improve the air around the facility and help restore the environment. They also stand as a living reminder of the day the community came together for the sake of its health workers and patients. Long after the sanitary supplies have been used and the floors have been mopped again, the trees will keep growing. The outreach at Busembatia Health Centre III shows what a committed group can achieve when they combine generosity with hands on service. Raising Steps Uganda did not simply visit; they gave, they cleaned and they planted, addressing the immediate needs of patients while thinking about the long term wellbeing of the facility itself. For the staff and patients of Busembatia, the visit was a welcome reminder that they are not forgotten. And for Raising Steps Uganda, it was another step forward in a mission built on the belief that real change begins with showing up. Raising Steps Uganda continues to work with communities across the country. Those who wish to support future outreaches are encouraged to get in touch with the organisation.

LUBIRA PRIMARY SCHOOL OUTREACH

LUBIRA PRIMARY SCHOOL OUTREACH

Raising Steps Uganda conducted a school outreach program at Lubira Primary School in Bugweri District, engaging pupils through counselling and guidance, empowerment talks, career guidance, and a tree planting exercise aimed at supporting the holistic development of learners in the area. The outreach, which drew the participation of teachers, pupils, and the school administration, forms part of the organization's continued efforts to reach underserved communities with programs that address the emotional, social, and academic needs of young people. During the counselling and guidance session, pupils were given a safe space to share the challenges they face at school and at home. Facilitators from Raising Steps Uganda guided discussions on self esteem, peer pressure, and healthy coping mechanisms, offering learners practical support and encouragement to navigate difficulties in their daily lives. The empowerment segment of the outreach focused on helping pupils build confidence and recognize their own potential. Through motivational talks and group engagements, learners, particularly girls, were encouraged to embrace their abilities and pursue their goals despite the obstacles they may face. A career guidance session was also held to expose pupils to different career paths and the steps required to achieve them. The session sought to inspire learners to set academic goals early and understand the opportunities available to them beyond their immediate environment. The outreach concluded with a tree planting activity within the school compound, where pupils and members of the Raising Steps Uganda team planted trees together. The exercise was aimed at promoting environmental responsibility among learners while leaving a lasting, physical mark of the visit on the school grounds. Speaking on the outreach, officials from Raising Steps Uganda reaffirmed the organization's commitment to supporting schools in rural communities through programs that nurture both the minds and character of young learners. The administration and pupils of Lubira Primary School expressed gratitude for the visit, describing it as timely and impactful. Raising Steps Uganda says it will continue to extend similar outreach programs to other schools, guided by its mission of empowering young people, one step at a time.
